The unique culture that is the Gullah nation should not be overlooked and ignored. It should be celebrated, just as it was during the Gullah Geechee Gala and Rice Festival. Did you know that the land where rice was grown stretches from Jacksonville, Florida to Jacksonville, North Carolina, and thirty miles inland? “However far the stream flows, it never forgets its source.” - African Proverb.

Three students in Brunswick County received STEM Goodnight Scholarships in February 2025, and two attended Brunswick County Early College High School: Angel Deras-Alvarado from Leland, North Carolina, is attending NC State University to study Human Biology and Trevor Smith from Bellville, North Carolina, is also attending NC State University to study Computer Science.

My older sister was born with Epidermolysis Bullosa Simplex-Dowling Mara, or EBSDM. She’s the girl you see in the picture! This was taken shortly after she was born, when my parents were still struggling to take care of such a delicate child. Children with this disease are called Butterfly Children, and each and every day they continue to fight is a miracle.
