We often only push for change 

on New Year’s day 

We find the excuse to better ourselves 

In the idea of a different calendar day 

“I’m going to do it this year,” she says. 

But when the end of each year comes near 

She’s back where she first sat 

Watching the ball drop- her eyes to her lap 

She failed again, it’s clear 

“I’m going to do it this year,” she says. 

And I wait to see if one day she sees 

Her growth will never outrun 

Society’s expanding expectations 

of what she needs done
