“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” is a story about a far-from-popular high school freshman, Charlie. He’s very shy, but it’s all due to mental health issues from events that happened as a child. The author, Stephen Chbosky, told this story very well; the perspective, writing, and everything in this book give readers a good view of peer pressure, drugs, and alcohol. Charlie writes to an unknown reader known as “Friend” and Charlie tells this person everyone and everything they have done, felt, met, and loved.
Charlie meets two social rejects who are cooler than him, but accept him for who he is and he eventually feels included. The author wrote the characters amazingly, it’s like you’re right there with him knowing his thoughts and feelings. I personally connected with some of the characters in the book, by their actions, thoughts, and feelings throughout. I think this book should be read by everyone in (or going into) high school, this gives readers an insider view as a freshman, dealing with the world of drugs, sex, and peer pressure and how to deal with those things.
