The 2014 New York Times bestseller ‘The Fault in Our Stars” is quoted to be “⎯one of the most genuine and moving love stories in recent American fiction, but also an existential tragedy of tremendous intelligence and courage and sadness,” by TIME Magazine.
Hazel Grace and Augustus (Gus) Waters both suffer in their lives from cancer. They meet at a Cancer Kid Support Group, in which Hazel’s parents recommend that she have a normal teenage life. At first, Augustus stares. Stares, and just keeps staring. “Why are you looking at me like that?” “Because you’re beautiful. I enjoy looking at beautiful people.”
At first, Augustus says his cancer has been seen as 14 months clear. One day, Hazel has trouble breathing, because her lungs have been filled with fluid, and she is sent to the ICU for six days. She hopes that Gus hasn’t seen her looking like this. (Spoiler Alert: He was there, holding her hand, hoping she’d wake up.)
Hazel and Gus have questions about the book “An Imperial Affliction.” They get in touch with the author and ask him how the book is supposed to end. They get an email back from a girl close to the author.
In order to get the answers to their questions, they must come to Amsterdam to meet the author in person. They find out that the author is ⎼ not the type of person they expected. But, they aren’t going to waste their time arguing about the answers. They spend the rest of their time in Afghanistan together. Just as they arrive at their room, Gus starts to tell her something. He tells her that after Hazel had gone into the ICU, he felt an ache in his hip; so he went to get a PET scan. Hazel doesn’t want to believe him, but he tells her. “I lit up like a Christmas tree, Hazel Grace. The lining of my chest, my left hip, everywhere.” … Read the book yourselves to find out what happens next.
I heavily recommend this book. I think it is a great heartwarming story. I do recommend that you watch the movie as well, either before or after the book. I love how John Green develops his characters, as well as the storyline. It is a very emotional love story, between these two characters. I’m truly glad that John Green decided to write this book, and with being able to understand how these cancer patients feel. I’m glad I was able to pick up this book and start reading it, and I don’t regret it. Truly 10 out of 10.
