Each semester, Brunswick County Early College High School (BCECHS) Rotary/Interact puts together a kettle corn sale to help support the community. Most profits are sent to local places like animal shelters, Brunswick Interagency Program (BIP), and more.
“I am so proud of the club members and their hard work!”, says club advisor Anela Mabry. Interact sold a total of 126 bags, making a total of about $1300.
But they are not only supporting the local community. We also get to support a local small business.
Based in Ocean Isle Beach, NC, Dixieland Kettle Corn was founded in 2011. While led by “Pa and Ma Kettle (Jason and Dawn), their son Wyatt also known as “Jr. Kettle” and Georgia “Grandma Kettle” also pitch in.
They began the company simply thinking it would be fun, but it became a full-time ordeal, spreading all over southeastern NC.
Their goal with this company is to spread gourmet products at a fair price. Their business has become so successful, they have a group termed, “kettle heads” that follow them around from event to event.
This may be because they make authentic, old-fashioned kettle corn. Usually made over a large open kettle, with white sugar and high-quality popping oil. That makes them one of a kind, especially when you add their classic and unique flavors.
From the original Sweet and Salty, Caramel, and the ever so popular Sriracha, or Cinnamon Bun Frosting, Flaming Cheddar N Ghost Pepper, and incredibly unique Pickle Pop.
“I think that the popcorn sale is really good because it has some delicious flavors and makes a lot of money for our club. I think we do good with what we do with the money though, we spend the money we raise on shelters and helping people” says Junior Kailee Conner, a member of the Interact club.
The club takes the funding they gain from the sale and gives it back to the community. For example, last semester they gave about $500 to both BIP and the animal shelter.
Not only does this spread joy throughout the community, but it’s also a great way to benefit those who need it.
So, join Dixieland Kettle Corn at future events like the St. Patty’s Day Festival on March 16th, and the Oak Island Spring Market on March 23rd, to enjoy your own experience with classic, old-fashioned kettle corn.
