Role models are people we look up to and attempt to imitate or use as our divine example. We may have many different role models throughout our lives, some in specific fields and others more indefinitely. Role models can come in many different forms and figures, but their influence is either beneficial or harmful. They can be someone whom you value their character, appreciate their attitude or integrity, and hope to imitate; on the other hand, they can be a source of ill influence, idolization, and jealousy.
When you were a youth, or if you are one now, your role model(s) were in all probability older kids who you imagined to be cool and popular. They also could have been a parent, grandparent, or sibling; however, depending upon your situation, your role model could have been someone who possessed something you lacked, had opportunities you wished for, or had the discipline for something you appreciated.
In some situations, people pay close attention to these figures in order to imitate their behavior, learn from their actions, and maybe even their mistakes. In other situations, people may go to the extreme and idolize their figures, trying to not only be like them, but to be them. This behavior happens to the best of us, yet this excessive manifestation can prove to be exceedingly harmful to us and those around us. Without realizing it, we could be allowing this person, or the idea of this person, to change or even transform us. Change isn’t always bad, but change can be a gradual, steady, and in all probability an overlooked process. We can allow people to influence or twist our mindset, actions, or spirituality; the whole time remaining obliviously ignorant. Some faulty figures will take advantage of this in order to manipulate your actions to serve their desires. Other times, it will be you who is blameworthy. You are responsible as well as accountable for your own behavior and actions. In fact, your alleged ill influence could just as well be negligent itself.
Strange as it may seem, you are most likely a role model for someone yourself. Are you a leading figure? Do you at least attempt to display a good example for the unknown, eager eyes observing? We are all faulty figures sometimes, and it is essential not to beat oneself up over faults and errors. The critical matter is to be aware of one’s surroundings and influence, and to at least attempt improvement steadily; you will reap the benefits of your actions.
To conclude, the importance of the function of a role model cannot be overstated. It is a commonly overlooked concept that must be properly brought to light. We must be vigilant, rigorous, and heed our surroundings in an effort to better ourselves and society.
