The North Carolina Science Festival (NCSciFest), the state’s largest celebration of science, returns for its 15th year this April with over 500 events spanning the mountains to the coast. This year’s theme, “Everyday, Everywhere, Everyone,” highlights how science is a part of daily life and accessible to all. Among the standout local events are those hosted by Ingram Planetarium and its sister facility, the Museum of Coastal Carolina, offering a variety of engaging activities for all ages.
Kickoff Event: Star Party at Ingram Planetarium
Mark your calendars for the Star Party on April 5, from 6 to 9 p.m., a free event that launches the local SciFest celebrations. As part of the statewide star party, guests can enjoy a night under the stars with telescopes available to observe celestial objects like the setting sun, the moon, and beyond. The Planetarium’s science hall will also feature interactive STEM activities, including a solar system walk. Regular laser shows will run as scheduled but require an admission fee.
First-Ever Preschool Day: STEM Fun for Little Learners
For the first time, the Planetarium and Museum will host Preschool Day on April 8, designed specifically for young children and their guardians. Activities will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and include hands-on science and craft projects tailored to preschoolers.
At the Museum, little ones can explore the “At the Seashore” theme through sensory play, sorting seashells, learning about tidal pool creatures, and examining sand textures under microscopes. A special Sea Tales program will also take place at 11 a.m.
At the Planetarium, kids can dive into astronomy with telescopes, felt board planet activities, and shadow experiments. Two special dome theater shows will be offered:
Accidental Astronauts at 10 a.m., featuring robo-kids on an unexpected space adventure.
- Magic Globe at 11 a.m., telling the story of a girl who uses a magical device to change the world’s seasons.
The celebration continues with additional events:
Family Day on April 19, offering STEM activities for all ages.
- Earth Day Celebration from April 22-25, focusing on sustainability and environmental science
