Can you believe it’s November? Another year is slipping by.
I would like to thank our contributing Cape Fear Voices writers this month:
Maryann Nunnally, David Hume, III, Chuck Bins, Nancy Bryans, John Gozzi, Lisa Mote, Linda Merlino, Dan Mask, Dan Neizmik, Janet Stiegler, Leah Stiegler, Katie Steve, Brendan Connelly, Victor Fernandez, Gerald Decker, and, of course, Tony Swegle.
Last month, I asked the writers to think about a new format to express their views–Point/Counter Point. The idea was to write about an opinion or event from their perspective and then detail the viewpoint of another person on the same topic. My husband, Tony, and I wrote, “Spouse Health Issue,” which after reading it, you will agree it sums up our yin and yang kind of relationship. Dan Mask wrote, “What We Once Had/Money,” about overdeveloping from the resident’s standpoint and what the developers make of it. Lisa Mote wrote, “Pet Love,” about the sensitive issue of having to put a pet down while Linda Merlino wrote, “A Second Helping,” about the stress of competing with her mother’s cooking during large family events. Janet Stiegler and her daughter, Leah, wrote, “Wedding Mania/Invest in Your Marriage,” about how weddings have changed over the years and asks should they?
I’d like your comments about this “new thing,” and if you would like to see more of it.
Also in this issue, Maryann Nunnally shares her experience with adult children–one that those of us with children will all feel at some point in our lives, read, “On Aging,” to see what you have to look forward to with your own children. It is both comforting and frustrating, but it is based in love. Chuck Bins tells a sad story about how the people in your life get entangled for the good or the bad, in “Sycamore Entanglements,” and from an inspirational point of view, Katie Steve says “Rise Up Like A Phoenix,” while Brendan Connelly talks about how a family took a challenge and turned it into a mission, in his story, “Learning From Tragedy.”
We have military news from VCAP, who will participate in an Event at the Cameron Art Museum, and we salute, firefighter, Chief Hayes on a new appointment.
Our teens are back in school and busy writing. Thanks for contributing this month to: Makalya P, Lariyah D, Violet A, Kaleigh A, Ruby C, Abigail B. Olivia P, Willow P, and our writers from Australia, Philip and Thurston. Our teens write about everything from “Learning In Fear,” to “Why Habitat For Humanities Needs Your Support.”
All of us at Cape Fear Voices hope you enjoy this issue and thank you for being our audience.
If you would like to write a story for us, send it to [email protected]. Please share our website and stories with your friends and family and have a great holiday!
