If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that when VFW Post 12196 hosts an event—it’s a party! And it certainly was on Saturday, September 28, when the Post, celebrated the 125th Anniversary of The Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, which was founded in 1899.
With all branches of the military represented, there was an air of reverence mixed with a pledge of commitment to celebrate the organization and what it stands for.
In a message to the 1.4 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary, past Commander-in-Chief, Duane Sarmiento said, “As we look back on 125 years of service, we also look forward to the future. The challenges facing Veterans today are ever evolving, and it is our duty to adapt and continue to be fierce advocates for those who came before us and those coming after us. Together, we will ensure that every Veteran receives the care and support they need, and that their sacrifices are never forgotten.”
Post Commander, Gerald Decker, hosted the program, which not only celebrated the anniversary, but formally introduced the new Veterans Creative Arts Program (VCAP.) This program addresses a growing need in the Cape Fear area by providing access to creative arts programs for active military, veterans and first responders, especially those experiencing the effects of service-related trauma.
If you are an active military person, a Veteran or first responder, go to www.veteranscreativearts.org, and register for an art program that interests you.
Commander Decker announced, “Thanks to those attending the event and our sponsors, we raised over $4,000.00 to help fund VCAP and it’s essential mission.” He went on to thank Cammeron Batanides, CEO of VCAP and Eric Terashima for their work in helping to establish the program as well as State Senator Bill Rabon, Mayor Brenda Bozeman and Mayor Allen for their support.

It was inspiring to see Veterans of all ages gather together in camaraderie but even more so inspiring were the bright young faces of the Honor Guard—3 young men and a young lady in their military uniforms marching to the front with the flag displayed proudly in front of them. From their mirror-shined shoes to their intent gazes, they represent why this organization will continue on in its mission, honor and glory for many years to come.
