On April 12, we celebrated the work of our seasoned writers and our teens with the 5th annual awards banquet.
For the first time in the history of the banquet, 20% of the audience was made up of our teen writers, interns and their parents. The night was about the interns, who have worked so hard this past school year.
Over the course of several Saturdays at the Leland library, they did interviews with the event sponsors, covered the Rice Festival and the Brunswick Cultural Arts pirate event and interviewed each other as a method of introduction to the audience. It was all about podcasts and hearing tomorrow’s voices today.
Makayla Procter, one of our interns is actually doing a story about the event for the Cape Fear Voices webpage, so I won’t go into detail, but I will say that it was a loud and wonderful evening at Blossom’s event center in Magnolia Greens.
Our winning Cape Fear Voices writers were Janet Stiegler, in the category of Humor, for her story, “Italian Pastry Chef.” Doug Ensley won in the category of Creative Writing/Poetry for his story, “Seconds.” David Hume’s story, “Rachel Carson’s Struggle,” won in the Non-Fiction/History category, and Maryann Nunnally won in the Memoir/Personal Essay category for her story, “My Dad Always Had My Back.”
Thank you to those who attended and also to our sponsors, Brunswick Arts Council (event sponsor,) Carl Parker of the NAACP, DrawFire, Duke Energy, Deb Pickett from Signature Wealth Strategies, Farm Bureau, First Bank, Mari Lou Wong Chong, Leland Councilman, Bill McHugh, Z’s Barbershop, JBG painting, Judy Budd from CONNECT, Mimi and Papa’s Gourmet Popcorn and Sylvan Learning Center.
If you haven’t been to any Cape Fear Voices/Teen Scene awards banquets, you are missing a lot of fun, great food and a wonderful celebration of writers and future leaders. We want to see you at the banquet next year.
